Background of the Study (400 words)
Drug addiction is a complex and chronic condition that affects millions of individuals globally, including in Nigeria, where substance abuse is rising among various age groups. The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Lagos State plays a crucial role in the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals suffering from drug addiction. Rehabilitation for drug addiction typically involves a combination of medical, psychological, and social interventions designed to help patients regain control of their lives and prevent relapse. One such intervention that has gained increasing attention is peer support, which leverages the shared experiences of individuals who have gone through similar struggles to encourage recovery (Olawale & Nwachukwu, 2024).
Peer support in the context of drug rehabilitation refers to the assistance provided by individuals who have successfully navigated addiction recovery and are now helping others in similar situations (Yusuf & Bello, 2023). Research has shown that peer support can play a significant role in the rehabilitation process by providing emotional support, offering practical advice, and fostering a sense of community among patients. This peer-based approach helps to reduce feelings of isolation and builds self-efficacy, which are crucial components of successful recovery (Adewale & Suleiman, 2025).
In Nigeria, the application of peer support in rehabilitation programs is still evolving, and there is limited empirical research on its effectiveness, especially in psychiatric settings such as the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Lagos State. However, preliminary studies suggest that peer support could contribute significantly to reducing relapse rates and improving treatment outcomes in drug rehabilitation programs (Olawale & Nwachukwu, 2024). This study aims to examine the impact of peer support on patients undergoing rehabilitation for drug addiction at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Lagos, exploring how this intervention affects their recovery, self-esteem, and overall well-being.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Drug addiction remains a significant public health issue in Nigeria, with rehabilitation programs playing a pivotal role in supporting patients through their recovery journey. Despite the growing recognition of peer support as a valuable tool in addiction rehabilitation, its effects in Nigerian psychiatric settings remain inadequately explored. Patients undergoing drug addiction rehabilitation often struggle with feelings of isolation, anxiety, and a lack of motivation, which can hinder their progress and increase the risk of relapse. Peer support, however, offers an opportunity to overcome these challenges by providing emotional and social resources that are rooted in shared experiences (Adewale & Suleiman, 2025).
At the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Lagos State, while professional healthcare providers offer essential medical and psychological support, the inclusion of peer support in the rehabilitation process is still under-researched. Understanding the impact of peer support on patients’ emotional well-being, recovery outcomes, and self-esteem is critical for improving treatment strategies and patient care. There is a need to assess whether peer support can enhance the overall effectiveness of rehabilitation programs and whether it helps patients better manage the psychological challenges of overcoming addiction (Yusuf & Bello, 2023).
This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the effects of peer support on patients undergoing rehabilitation for drug addiction at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Lagos, and determining how this intervention contributes to better recovery outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of peer support in enhancing the rehabilitation process for drug addiction patients.
2. To evaluate the effect of peer support on patients' emotional well-being and self-esteem during rehabilitation.
3. To determine the impact of peer support on the relapse rate and overall recovery outcomes of patients.
Research Questions
1. How does peer support affect the rehabilitation process for drug addiction patients at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Lagos?
2. What is the effect of peer support on patients' emotional well-being and self-esteem during their rehabilitation?
3. How does peer support influence relapse rates and long-term recovery outcomes for patients undergoing rehabilitation?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: There is no significant effect of peer support on the rehabilitation process for drug addiction patients.
2. H₀: Peer support does not significantly improve patients' emotional well-being and self-esteem during rehabilitation.
3. H₀: Peer support has no significant impact on the relapse rate and overall recovery outcomes of patients.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on patients undergoing rehabilitation for drug addiction at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Lagos State. Limitations may include variability in the level of peer support available to patients, self-reported data that may introduce bias, and challenges in measuring subjective outcomes such as emotional well-being and self-esteem.
Definitions of Terms
• Peer Support: Assistance provided by individuals with lived experience of overcoming drug addiction to those currently undergoing rehabilitation.
• Drug Addiction Rehabilitation: A comprehensive treatment process aimed at helping individuals recover from substance dependence through medical, psychological, and social interventions.
• Relapse Rate: The frequency of patients returning to drug use after a period of abstinence.
